Which type of food do you think Americans waste more of: Pumpkins or fresh kale?

While not all of the 133 billion pounds of food wasted in the U.S. can be saved, we can greatly reduce the harmful effects of food waste on the environment.

Harvest Power utilizes anaerobic digestion to naturally repurpose organic waste. For example, Harvest Power’s award-winning Energy Garden in Orlando converts food waste into natural soil enhancers and clean energy.

So what foods do we waste the most? We’ve provided some interesting statistics from the February 2014 USDA Food Loss Report: turns out that canned foods are discarded more often than fresh foods.

*More canned and frozen vegetables get wasted than fresh vegetables. *Only 38% of fresh tomatoes get lost. Yet, 72% of canned tomatoes get wasted.
